Hand Feeding a Great White
Somebody recently shared this YouTube video with me:
My first knee-jerk response was, “What a nutjob”, but I thought about it a bit more. Is she really that crazy?
Like all animals, we have a pretty good “gut” feeling about when we are in danger, particularly around animals. I’m sure evolutionary biologists could write a thesis about why this is, but in short, it boils down to survival instincts and those having better ones living longer (and passing on those valuable genes).
The woman in the video admits that she usually does not feel this way around white sharks, but this one was different. The shark even looks less aggressive than your run-of-the-mill white shark.
What do you think, shark whisperer or nutjob?

I’m not sure I would have been quite as brave as she was. I had the jaws music playing in my head all the way through that clip.
Still… I’d love to see a great white up close.

I’ve seen this sort of thing in South Australia where divers have stood on top of the cages and stroked large great white sharks. It scares me, but so far I have not heard of any of these scuba divers getting injured. Check out the sites around Port Lincoln, SA here:

First of all, it’s totally random to run across you running a dive blog now?
Second of all, I still think she is crazy. When diving I’d rather not deal with sharks much longer than I am tall! I’m fine with most of them, but great whites, bull, and tiger sharks seem best left alone to their own devices.

That was a brave thing to do! She was so close, and while watching the video, I was really expecting that the shark would eventually bite her hands off. But, wow. That gave me an idea to create shark t-shirts designs with a picture of a woman feeding a shark.

Okay it wasn’t as aggressive as some, but it was snapping mighty close to her toes. Any animal with sharp teeth shouldn’t be eating that close to bare toes.
